So she won't float away

April 2006
Acrylic on canvas 50x70cm (Sold)

Years ago I was standing watching a comedian perform on the street in Dublin, he was making jokes about the appearance of each person who walked past him... One woman who walked past was carrying two heavy shopping bags and he said "You see this woman here, she has a rare condition daydreamers disease, her head is so much in the clouds that she has to carry around heavy bags all the time so she won`t float away."

It`s not a very funny joke, but it created an image in my head, and I did a small sketch of the idea... Recently I found that drawing and decided to make the painting I began thinking about years ago....

It made me think about the weights that people carry around every day, and maybe they do that so they won`t float away... If someone has a great success, you always hear people saying, "don`t get carried away" "don`t let it go to your head"... So people carry weights, and try not to be too happy about something so that they don`t get disappointed and hurt, people focus on what could go wrong, instead of just enjoying their success... and maybe that`s intelligent? If you get ready for the worst, it doesn`t hurt so much when something goes wrong? Or does it just mean that you never get the good from anything?

This painting was been shortlisted in the top six artworks in the Irish Art Compendium Irish Art Awards 2007.
